How to Escape the Dark Valley of Your Hadoop Journey

How to Escape the Dark Valley of Your Hadoop Journey

It happens to the best of us. You know your business is bursting with useful data, and you’ve only begun to scratch the surface. So you strike out to build an analytical platform, using all the great open-source tools you’ve been hearing so much about. First, you have to capture all the data that’s coming in, before you even know what you’re going to do with it. So you build a butterfly net to catch it all, using Hadoop.

How I Hire: 6 Ways I Find and Hire Hardworking Millennials | LinkedIn:

By Lesley Jane Seymour

Teach kids programming

A collection of resources I’ve been gathering the best resources to teach children & teens programming — books, environments, apps, courseware and games.
These resources are meant for teachers and parents who want to have their children fall in love with computers and see the magic of programming.
I’m staying away from philosophical debates of whether kids should learn to program, when they should start and other such topics. I know this — I fell in love with computers in 3rd grade (a beautiful ZX Spectrum), and I want to share the joy of programming with others.
I’ve chosen in this list to be quite comprehensive in listing all resources — but also choosy to restricting this to things I found useful & of high quality.
I’ve also started this list with my own opinionated picks on what kind of material from the large list of resources may be suitable for children with different interests and at different points in their learning.
Sharing this broadly, do let me know what else I can add to this list.

Colorado’s job growth above regional, national averages | Colorado Springs Business Journal

Colorado’s job growth above regional, national averages | Colorado Springs Business Journal: By Amy Gillentine

Colorado’s economy continues to add jobs at a higher rate than the rest of the Rocky Mountain states and the nation.

Colorado’s economy grew nearly 2 percentage points in August, from 54.8 to 56.5, according to the Goss Institute for Economic Research. The overall business conditions index, a mathematical average of new orders, production, employment, inventories and delivery lead time, is growing if the rate is above 50, which is neutral, Goss said.

Four Areas Where Senior Leaders Should Focus Their Attention

by Peter Bregman  |  11:30 AM September 3, 2013
It was getting close to lunch time and the people seated around the table — the CEO and seven of his direct reports — were clearly getting antsy. But it wasn't because they were hungry. In fact, they'd been eating snacks all morning, mostly out of boredom.
The COO was at the front of the room, talking through slides projected on a screen. The conversation was primarily one way, with the COO explaining and, when necessary, defending his work.

Colorado's STEM Program

So, I had an opportunity to attend the CTA's Industry Breakfast this morning. The topic of discussion was the Governors’ STEM Action Plan. Being heavily vested in this topic, I was excited to attend this event and listen to Senator Mike Johnston and the Accenture Foundation’s Scott Fast as they discussed education reform and more specifically the STEM Action Plan. Although I am entirely convinced that the need for more STEM graduates is absolutely necessary, I was less than convinced that the government has an actionable plan to address these needs. It seems they might be putting the cart before the horse by asking for a significant tax increase this fall prior to having a detailed plan as to how we produce more STEM workers. Now in all fairness, the government might have a more detailed plan and simply did not have enough time to share during the breakfast, but I would certainly want to see the details of such a plan before I voted in favor of a 27% increase on the state income tax. I would be more in favor of a voucher plan that allowed the parents the option of enrolling children in STEM centric charter schools or private schools and allowing the free market greater participation in possible solutions. The biggest areas of improvement that I have recently seen in addressing the shortage of STEM workers have been generated in the free market. Technology schools such as the gSchool and RefactorU are popping up to meet the demand for more technology workers. These types of free market solutions are exactly what is needed in helping the workforce adapt to the needs of the 21st century. I appreciate the fact the government is concerned about a shortage of STEM workers, but I lack confidence in their ability to come up with viable, cost effective solutions.

Who have I helped today?

Sometimes it is important to occasionally step back and evaluate how well you are spending your time. I often catch myself using my busy schedule as an excuse as to why I neglect the really important things in life. What a poor excuse! My schedule is one of the few things I actually control. Willful or not, I deprive myself of the time I could use to help someone in need. Instead, I should keep my eyes wide open for opportunities to provide others with some assistance. Because at the end of the day, I should be comfortable asking myself "who have I helped today?" Helping others has the biggest ROI.
